Artist Residency: Suzanne Ciani
Suzanne Ciani, a pioneer of electronic and spatial sound, joined Music For The Sea for an artist residency in Ibiza and Formentera, bringing together ocean listening, artistic research, and community exchange.
During her stay, a Posidonia field expedition was carried out to Formentera in collaboration with Vellmarí Association, offering the opportunity to experience Posidonia oceanica meadows directly within their natural environment. Moving through the marine park with local experts, time was dedicated to observing, listening, and understanding the seagrass ecosystem that plays a vital role in the Mediterranean.
Field recordings were made at sea and around the island, documenting the subtle acoustic character of the marine environment shaped by water movement and marine life. These moments of attentive listening formed a quiet but essential part of the residency, grounding the artistic process in direct engagement with the ocean.
The residency formed part of Posidonia Soundscapes, a long-term project endorsed by the United Nations Ocean Decade (UNESCO). Her visit also included an intimate community gathering at Wider Sounds Studio, where Suzanne Ciani shared her quadraphonic Buchla system in a small, focused setting. The gathering created space for listening, dialogue, and exchange, connecting generations of artists and sound practitioners. It was a privilege to host a moment of shared attention with one of the pioneers of electronic music, rooted in care, curiosity, and collective listening.
