Sea of Sound aboard zero-emission Galaxie

The Sea of Sound expedition took place aboard Galaxie, a 25-meter zero-emission sailboat by Love The Mediterranean, bringing together marine science, sound, and community along the Ibiza coastline. Guided by marine scientists and underwater acoustic experts from Ocean World of Sound and INMAR – University of Cádiz, the journey focused on listening as a way to better understand the sea.

Using hydrophones, participants listened in real time to the underwater soundscape of the Mediterranean, exploring how sound reveals marine life, movement, and environmental health. The experience centred on Posidonia oceanica, the ancient seagrass meadows surrounding Ibiza, often referred to as the “lungs of the Mediterranean” for their role in oxygen production, carbon storage, and biodiversity.

The expedition was accompanied by a citizen science workshop and community gathering at Wider Sounds Studio, offering an introduction to underwater acoustics and Passive Acoustic Monitoring. Time at sea unfolded through quiet observation, shared listening, and moments of reflection, including a live ambient sound performance onboard.

Sea of Sound formed part of Posidonia Soundscapes, a long-term initiative endorsed by the United Nations Ocean Decade (UNESCO), exploring how listening can support ocean awareness and marine conservation.
