2025 UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3)

TIDAL SHIFTS, presented through a transdisciplinary collaboration of partners, is an immersive audiovisual exhibition and symposium bridging ocean science, sound, art, and community action to foster Ocean Literacy and public engagement. Inviting participants to explore the Ocean as a source of wonder, intercultural dialogue, and shared responsibility, this initiative is co-created to support Challenge 10 of the UN Ocean Decade — restoring humanity’s relationship with the Ocean — and contributes to SDG 14 and the global goal to protect 30% of marine environments by 2030.

TIDAL SHIFTS, presented through a transdisciplinary collaboration of partners, is an immersive audiovisual exhibition and symposium bridging ocean science, art, sound, and community action to reconnect humanity with the Ocean, strengthen Ocean Literacy, and catalyze inclusive engagement toward SDG 14.

Hosted at NEO Gallery—a vibrant cultural hub located near the Port of Nice and the UN Ocean Conference venue—the event will feature underwater acoustic research presentations, participatory visual art, multi-sensory soundscape installations, scientific dialogues, and youth-driven initiatives fostering intercultural dialogue and collective stewardship.

Initiatives such as "Posidonia Soundscapes," developed with the INMAR Institute of Marine Research, University of Cádiz, and Ocean World of Sound, will demonstrate how underwater acoustic monitoring can serve as a powerful tool for understanding and conserving marine ecosystems, including the Posidonia oceanica meadows—essential carbon sinks flourishing along the Mediterranean coast, including in France.

Music For The Sea will curate immersive sonic journeys and visual experiences, including a live "Re-Oceaning" audiovisual installation—an interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to raising awareness through sensory engagement and storytelling—developed in collaboration with international artists exploring the intersection of science, environmental data, and emotional resonance.

Visitors will experience multi-sensory installations designed to foster emotional reconnection with the Ocean and deepen public engagement with marine conservation.

Sounds of the Ocean by Embodied Sounds will offer a meditative underwater odyssey, while films such as "HOPE" from Peace Boat’s Arctic voyages and "Against the Tide: A Journey for Climate Hope" will further highlight ocean biodiversity, climate hope, and resilience narratives. Underwater soundscapes from Arctic waters and the Mesoamerican Reef will enrich the experience.

Ocean World of Sound (WOS) will present "Ghosts of the Caribbean," an immersive art-science installation translating the devastating 2023 coral bleaching event on the Mesoamerican Reef, using real-time data from underwater listening stations and 3D photogrammetry.

The Tidal Shifts program will also feature a series of panels and roundtable discussions hosted by participating organizations, exploring art–science co-creation models, ocean storytelling, indigenous knowledge systems, and community engagement. Among them, Ocean World of Sound will contribute the panel "Art for Ocean Literacy: Sound, Visuals & Collective Stewardship," focusing on how creative practices can foster public engagement, intercultural dialogue, and shared stewardship of the Ocean.

Supported by a wide network of organizations—including Peace Boat US, Restore Coral, Blue Green Generation, Ocean Rescue Alliance International, Sustainable Ocean Alliance, Sounds of the Ocean, and the Mediterranean Posidonia Network—the program embraces a multi-stakeholder, inclusive, and intergenerational approach, elevating Indigenous knowledge systems, youth leadership, and innovative ocean solutions.

Tidal Shifts supports the UN Ocean Decade’s Challenge 10: "Restore Humanity’s Relationship with the Ocean," while promoting key Ocean Literacy principles:

  • Transforming education, scientific research, and public engagement,

  • Fostering community connection, artistic innovation, and sustainable blue economy pathways,
Accelerating communication, technology, and global cooperation for a resilient ocean future.

By weaving together scientific inquiry, artistic creation, emotional storytelling, and community-based dialogue, Tidal Shifts invites participants to rediscover the Ocean as a source of wonder, intercultural dialogue, shared responsibility, and collective action—supporting the global movement to protect 30% of marine environments by 2030.
